{"id":10509,"date":"2012-10-03T14:46:01","date_gmt":"2012-10-03T18:46:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/devwp.davison.com\/blog\/?p=10509"},"modified":"2019-01-10T10:50:12","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T15:50:12","slug":"should-i-make-a-prototype-of-my-idea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.davison.com\/blog\/should-i-make-a-prototype-of-my-idea\/","title":{"rendered":"Should I Make a Prototype of My Idea?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019ve already embarked on the journey of pursuing your invention idea, you know the process can be an exciting, but confusing one.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10520 photo\" title=\"PROTOTYPING MY IDEA\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davison.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/PROTOTYPING-MY-IDEA-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"296\" \/>If you haven\u2019t yet started, you may find yourself stuck in either the excited or confused category.<\/p>\n<p>A <a title=\"Common Inventor Questions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davison.com\/helpful-hints\/questions-and-myths\/\">common question<\/a> for new inventors is \u201cShould I make a prototype of my idea?\u201d\u00a0 And, that question is common for a couple of reasons.\u00a0 Of course, when you come up with a new idea, the first thing you want to do is see it and touch it.\u00a0 So, the logical thought is to create it, then and there.\u00a0 Plus, if you don\u2019t have something tangible, you may question whether or not a company will even be interested in your invention idea.\u00a0 How will they see it the same way that you do?<\/p>\n<p>But, taking your idea from your mind and putting it in your hands can be a difficult and expensive thing to do.\u00a0 Here are some things to consider:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Do you have the time to create a working <a title=\"prototyping\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davison.com\/blog\/tag\/prototyping\/\">prototype<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What kind of materials will you need to make a prototype?<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How much will it cost to bring your idea to life in the form of a prototype?<\/p>\n<p>The truth is, when it comes to a new product, a prototype is more appealing than a drawing and companies will often go through many prototypes until they\u2019re happy with the <a title=\"sucessful products\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davison.com\/our-experience\/products\/\">final product<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When we present our clients\u2019 ideas and prototypes to corporations for possible licensing, it\u2019s not always the first one that is accepted.\u00a0 In fact, it rarely ever is.\u00a0 If a company shows an interest in one of our clients\u2019 ideas, we may send a product back to design over and over again, to test things like:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Are we using the same materials as our target corporation?<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Is the product cost-effective?<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Can the product be easily mass-produced?<\/p>\n<p>So, while you ultimately may want to have a prototype to present your idea, at the early stages of <a title=\"submit your idea\" href=\"https:\/\/secure.davison.com\/submitidea\/?source_id=690&amp;campaign_name=campaign-DblogSIP\">submitting your idea to our firm<\/a>, you are not required to have one ready.\u00a0 The confidentiality agreements that we provide will allow us to discuss your idea with you and then move forward to designing, engineering, prototyping and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019ve already embarked on the journey of pursuing your invention idea, you know the process can be an exciting, but confusing one.
