\"1950s<\/span><\/p>\n

When we think of the 1950s, we may think of donning poodle skirts and saddle shoes and heading to the sock hop to dance to some Elvis.\u00a0 But, it\u2019s what we may NOT think of that we want to examine today\u2026those ’50s fads and inventions that just didn\u2019t<\/span> quite catch on.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here’s a list of our five favorite funky ’50s inventions:<\/p>\n

1. Curved Barrel Machine Gun<\/strong>: The sleek, curved design of this fierce 1953 weapon allowed for shooting around corners!\u00a0 It was perfect for taking the “fire first, look later” approach!\u00a0 While it sounds pretty cool, we all may be a littler safer without this one!<\/p>\n

2. Handwriting Game<\/strong>: As if repeatedly writing \u201cI will not\u2026\u201d statements on the chalkboard wasn\u2019t<\/span> punishment enough, this engaging 1955 game challenged players to analyze each other\u2019s handwriting!\u00a0 I suppose practice makes perfect?<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Venetian Blind Sunglasses<\/strong>: Kanye<\/span> West may be trying to revive this trendy fad, but it certainly didn\u2019t<\/span> catch on when it was first introduced in 1950!\u00a0 Though they seem to have no real practical purpose, I suppose they\u00a0may good for only letting \u201csome\u201d UV rays in!<\/span><\/p>\n

4.Honegar<\/span><\/span><\/strong>: All you \u201cMan Vs. Food\u201d fans actually may love this crazy concoction.\u00a0 In 1959, Dr. DeForest<\/span> C. Jarvis mixed together honey and vinegar in an effort to remedy minor aches and pains.\u00a0 Hmmm\u2026 tempting, but I\u2019ll stick with ibuprofen!<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Vest Pocket Ash Tray, Rainy Day Cigarette Holder, Cigarette Holder Built for Two<\/strong>: We just couldn\u2019t<\/span> resist lumping these three ’50s inventions together.\u00a0 They were perfect for \u201clighting up\u201d with your lover on a rainy day and dropping the ashes in your vest!<\/span><\/p>\n

Now,<\/span> we know we said our favorite five inventions, but hope this honorable mention doesn’t ruffle your feathers – pun intended!<\/p>\n

The Sanitary Appliance for Birds<\/strong><\/a>, an undergarment designed to catch bird…. ummm<\/span>, well you know…. received patent number 2,882,858 in 1959!\u00a0 While it never really caught on, it is too bad all the birds of the world aren’t required to wear\u00a0undergarments as they soar high above our heads! <\/span><\/p>\n
