The Eraser is Here to Stay!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7183 photo\" style=\"margin-right: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davison.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/eraser.jpg\" alt=\"Featured Invention\" width=\"290\" height=\"187\" \/>Yesterday marked Rubber Eraser Day, a day that often passes without mention.\u00a0 Though many may scoff at celebrating the measly rubber eraser, this invention has given us the great luxury of being able to make mistakes for the past 250 years.<\/p>\n<p>When and where, might you ask, did the rubber eraser come about?\u00a0 On April 15, 1770, Englishman Joseph Priestley, said he discovered that vegetable gum was able to remove black lead pencil marks.\u00a0 He called this substance \u201crubber.\u201d\u00a0 That same year, English engineer Edward Nairne created the first widely-sold rubber eraser that he developed for an inventions competition. Nairne is said to have picked up a piece of rubber by accident, rather than the\u00a0usual piece of bread that he used to remove pencil marks, and he discovered that it worked wonders.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright photo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davison.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Eraser-2.jpg\" alt=\"Office Supply Inventions\" width=\"221\" height=\"274\" \/>The first erasers posed a problem to users, however, as rubber was perishable and tended to rot.\u00a0 Inventor Charles Goodyear patented a vulcanization process in 1844 that made rubber more durable.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until 90 years after the initial discovery of erasers that Hymen Lipman, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, received the first patent for attaching an eraser to the end of a pencil.\u00a0 Lipman sold the patent for $100,000, in 1682, to Joseph Reckendorfer, who proceeded to sue pencil manufacturer Faber-Castell for infringement.\u00a0 In 1875, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against Reckendorfer and concluded that the patent was invalid.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the invalid patent hasn\u2019t stopped erasers from being sold in all shapes and sizes throughout the years to help us correct our written mistakes.\u00a0 Now, if only we could invent something to erase all of life\u2019s mistakes!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7182 photo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davison.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Eraser-3.jpg\" alt=\"Office Supplies\" width=\"368\" height=\"310\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sources:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.american-inventor.com\/charles-goodyear\">https:\/\/www.american-inventor.com\/charles-goodyear<\/a><\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.historyofinformation.com\/index.php?id=1591<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jetpens.com\/articles\/Article:_History_of_Erasers\">http:\/\/www.jetpens.com\/articles\/Article:_History_of_Erasers<\/a><\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.enotes.com\/topic\/Hymen_Lipman<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday marked Rubber Eraser Day, a day that often passes without mention.\u00a0 Though many may scoff at celebrating the measly rubber eraser, this invention has given us the great luxury of being able to make mistakes for the past 250 years.
